Fred Meyer, 91, of Independence, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, peacefully passed away at his home in Independence on April 25, 2025, surrounded by his devoted family. Born on March 8, 1934, in New Haven, Kentucky, Fred's journey through life left an indelible mark on all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
A retired truck driver for 7-UP, Fred was known for his strong work ethic and commitment to his profession. His dedication extended beyond his career; he proudly served as a soldier in the Army, demonstrating his unwavering spirit and sense of duty to his country.
Fred was a longtime member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, where he found a supportive community that reflected his values. His commitment to service continued through active participation in local organizations, including the Elks Lodge and Moose Lodge. He was also honored as a proud Kentucky Colonel, a distinction that truly represented his character and contributions to the state he cherished.
In addition to his many accolades, Fred was celebrated as an inductee in the Covington Turner and the Northern Kentucky Hall of Fame, recognizing his influence and positive impact within his community.
Fred's love for his family was profound. He is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara Applebee Meyer, and their children: Karen Peterson; Sandra Williams (Roger); Frederick "Fritz" Meyer (Tammy); James Meyer (Lori); Susan Woodward (Korey); Tom Meyer (Rhonda); and Greg Meyer (Tiffany); Gary Groom, Rob Groom (Kathy); and the late David Groom. He cherished the time spent with his sister, Janet Knoebel, and took great pride in his legacy, which includes 30 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Lawrence Meyer and Elizabeth Marie Beam Meyer, his first wife, Sarah Meyer and a brother, Arthur (Artie) Meyer. His warmth, humor, and generous spirit will be greatly missed but fondly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to share in his life. Mass of Christian Burial will be 12 PM Wednesday, April 30, 2025 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 3285 Mills Road, Independence. Visitation will be Tuesday, 5-8 PM at Floral Hills Funeral Home, Chapel A. Burial will be at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
